Suggestions for Safe Overseas Travel

Written by travel suggestions on August 24, 2009 – 12:46 am

When you plan well, your international travel will be enjoyable and trouble-free. In this article we discuss suggestions for people traveling abroad. Of course this is by no means a complete list, but these suggestions may help you avoid common problems while traveling abroad.

Hints for Airports …

With the security measures that are now common in airports, make sure you check flight times and arrive with lots of time before your flights.

On the Flight …

Try and select travel times at night to help prevent jetlag.

While drinking alcohol can help you get to sleep faster, drinking a lot of alcohol can cause dehydration. Stay away from alcohol, but instead drink lots of water.

When reserving your flights don’t forget to notify the airline of any food requirements (for instance if you are a vegetarian).

Hints for Customs …

In addition to your travel documents, ensure you record the address you will be staying at in the country you are traveling. Reporting this information to the authorities at customs is required in some countries.

Packing Hints …

Ensure that you can clearly spot your luggage. Many items of luggage look similar and many bags may be waiting after your flight. A easy idea is to attach a ribbon to your bag’s handle so you can easily spot your luggage.

If you need to change planes at any point in your journey it is smart idea to make sure you have extra clothes in your carry-on luggage. It is not unusual for flights to be delayed. If you are delayed between flights a change of clothes will be welcome and refreshing!

Find out about the weather report in the places you are visiting. This will help you pack clothes suitable for the conditions you are traveling to and avoid overpacking unneeded items.

Make sure you don’t carry all your valuables in one bag. If that baggage goes missing you will be inconvenienced. Split up cash, credit cards, bank cards and traveler’s cheques between your purse, and various pockets and bags.

Hotels and Car Rental …

It might be obvious but don’t leave booking rental cars and hotels to the last minute. In the best tourist destinations or centers that host sporting and other large events there are often weeks of the year when it is very difficult to reserve a hotel room or rental car.

As well as a record of hotel and rental car reservations, to ensure you are charged the right amount, keep a record of the price quoted to you when you made your reservation.

Finally …

Travel, instead of broadening the mind, often merely lengthens the conversation.
